About This Piece

Part of the Japan Collection inspired by my travels there in 2016. This piece is set in the historic city of Nara. A place well known for the preservation of ancient Japan. In this city, wild deer roam free within the parks. Oh, to be a deer in Nara.

Although deer can be seen everywhere, I was drawn to this lone one by a water reserve. It leaves a lingering feeling of melancholy.

The finer details

As well as being inspired by the location, I also drew connection from a song lyrics by Alt - J that goes “…to be a deer in Nara”. It makes us think about what freedom feels like.

The print has beautifully captured every single stroke of the petals. You can get lost by just looking at each one! Yet every print has been hand finished too, giving more definition and adding its own unique stamp.
